- Pair of Engraved Mirrors. Flanders, Second Half of the 18th Century – “After Jan van Huysum”
Pair of engraved mirrors inspired by two paintings by Jan van Huysum (1682–1749), namely the Still Life preserved at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the one held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The original compositions have been adapted from a vertical to a horizontal format, broadening their proportions while simplifying the complexity of the paintings. The result is remarkably effective: the engravings faithfully reproduce the depicted scenes and achieve the analytical precision characteristic of Flemish art, capturing not only the various floral species but also the different insects with extraordinary detail.
In both works, richly decorated figural vases are placed upon a shelf and filled with flowers and fruit. In one composition, the vase is adorned with playing putti, while to the right appears an architectural backdrop featuring a column and a vestal crowned with a laurel wreath. In the second composition, a vase rests upon a shaped shelf and is decorated with a scene depicting a dance of vestals.
Both works, clearly conceived as part of a decorative cycle, bear the engraved inscription “after J. Van Huysum”.
The mirrors are mounted in matching period-style frames.
