- Pair of Candle-Bearing Angels, 17th-Century, Antique Sculpture
Pair of candle-bearing angels made of carved, painted and gilded limewood. The figures are depicted standing, with outspread wings, wearing garments animated by flowing, dynamic folds. One hand supports the candleholder, distinguished by a twisted torchon structure and foliate carving in the lower section, culminating in the upper drip pan; the other hand is placed at hip level.
The surface is predominantly gilded, with traces of polychromy on the flesh tones. Glazes of colour are also visible in the details of the robes and wings, applied over the layer of gold leaf. The shaped cartouche bases are decorated with scrolls at the corners.
The works show signs of age consistent with their period, as well as retouching to the polychromy, restorations and minor losses.
Dimensions: 85 x 81 x 14 cm
Code: ARARAR0315465
The pair can be attributed to 17th-century Italian production and belongs fully to the figurative culture of the Baroque, a period in which wooden sculpture acquired increasing theatrical and decorative emphasis. The function of the candle-bearing figure was often interpreted through angelic forms, conceived not merely as functional supports, but as elements capable of actively contributing to the theatrical construction of the surrounding space.
In this pair, conceived as a pendant and very likely intended for prestigious ornamental settings, several distinctive features of the Baroque language clearly emerge: the compositional dynamism, expressed through the wide-spread wings and the slightly animated posture of the figures; the lively treatment of the drapery, marked by deep, volumetric folds; and the intention to create a strong visual impact through the dialogue between gilding and polychromy.
Particularly significant are the cartouche-shaped bases with corner scrolls, an ornamental solution entirely in keeping with 17th-century taste, which enhances the sense of movement and plastic continuity between the figure and its support. Similarly, the candleholders decorated with foliate motifs reflect an ornamental repertoire widely found in Italian Baroque woodcarving, characterised by a marked attention to decorative richness and to the luminous effect of gilded surfaces.
In terms of type, dimensions and ornamental quality, the pair represents a significant example of Italian Baroque wooden sculpture, with a scenic presence still capable today of engaging effectively with both collecting contexts and prestigious interiors.
