Baroque Chest of Drawers in Walnut Burl and Marble

Florence, Late 17th Century

Description:

The chest rests on bracket feet and features 45-degree angled pilasters framing three drawers. Constructed from walnut, with poplar used for the interior, it is entirely veneered in walnut burl and red breccia marble.

The sides, decorated with alternating borders, feature large central marble panels enclosed within moulded frames. Framed walnut panels also embellish the drawer fronts, which are divided into two sections by a central escutcheon. The frieze beneath the top, enclosed within a moulded border, incorporates marble panels, as do the pilasters.

The top is entirely covered in red breccia marble and surrounded by a multi-tiered walnut moulding. The handles and keyhole escutcheons are made of gilt bronze.

Historical and Stylistic Analysis:

This exceptional piece of furniture is a walnut canterano, conceived and decorated in a manner reminiscent of late Renaissance architectural aedicules, which were often enriched with marble inlays.

The comparison is particularly evident in the marble panels adorning the frieze beneath the top, which recall the bases of the monumental cabinets produced by the workshops of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany.

While the incorporation of marble reflects a decorative taste still rooted in the Renaissance tradition, the piece is unmistakably a Baroque canterano, dating to the late 17th century, as clearly demonstrated by its bronze handles.

Of particular interest is the breccia marble employed in its decoration, distinguished by its richly varied veining and vibrant colours. A remarkably similar variety of marble can be found in the two columns adorning the right-hand side altar of Pisa Cathedral.
