- Pair of Corner Cabinets. Milan, third quarter of the 18th century
Pair of corner cabinets with curved fronts. The bracket feet support a shaped apron; the front features a framed door. The entire surface is veneered in walnut burl. The doors and tops feature heraldic shields surrounded by broad borders of bois de violette, framed by boxwood inlays depicting rocaille motifs, shells and flowering branches.
Dimensions: 92.5 Ă— 49 Ă— 49 cm.
Code: ANMOAN0308184
These two pieces can be attributed to the production of a Milanese workshop known as “Pel de Rava”, named after its distinctive marquetry. The broad bois de violette borders with rocaille outlines, resembling the skin of a peeled turnip, are the hallmark—the signature—of this workshop. Examples of its work are preserved at the Castello Sforzesco, and individual pieces occasionally appear on the market; finding a pair of corner cabinets is rather rare. They can be dated to around the 1760s and 1770s, when the Rococo taste, with its characteristic decorative motifs and asymmetrical inlays, reached its peak.
