- Antonio Gusela Pipe Belluno, circa 1750 Carved boxwood and silver

Pipe made of carved boxwood with silver parts, such as the mouthpiece, the bowl covering, and the rings connecting the four sections.
Carvings depict sea monsters, fish, and cherubs emerging from the water or resting on the waves, drinking from shells or playfully floating in a sea of ripples.
On the bowl are three carved cherubs, two of which face each other while hammering on an anvil; in the center, a carved heraldic shield depicts a dove holding an olive branch in its beak.
The second section bears the engraved signature “ANTONIO GUSELA F. BELUNO.”
Dimensions: 44 cm.
CODE: OGANOG0289435
Two other works by Antonio Gusela are known to have appeared on the international market.
The first is another pipe, similar to this one, with small variations and slightly smaller in size, also signed simply “ANTONIO GUSELA.”
The second work is a small low-relief carved panel depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, also in boxwood, of great interest as it bears the inscription “ANTONIO GUSELA. F. IN BELLUNO, DISSEPOLO BRUSTOLONI 1757.”
This object provides two important insights: first, that Gusela was a pupil and fellow countryman of the renowned sculptor Andrea Brustolon; second, that it allows us to date this production to the mid-18th century.
