Louis Vuitton Lady’s Low Trunk. Paris c.1880

Description:

Louis Vuitton trunk from around 1880, dating made possible in the first place thanks to the original label bearing the unique number of the product (11091), secondly by observing the hardware and the studs, which in those years were not yet branded with the letters.
Upholstered in historic striped oilcloth, first introduced in shades of brown and beige beginning in 1876. Brass locks, leather, wood, and brass fittings; bottom equipped with a beech wood frame, metal wheels and zinc foil, the latter bearing the Parisian address of the maison and made with a material used to ensure perfect insulation in trunks of the best quality.

It is a lady’s low trunk, i.e. a trunk available in four dimensions with well-defined volumes, designed to respond to the problem of long dresses with crinolines, an accessory for women’s lingerie used during the 19th century. Each size was designed for different items, from underwear that required less roominess to long court dresses. Fitted with quilted satin lid secured with blue, white and red banded ribbons, colors of the French flag.

The letter “H” placed within a triangle on both short sides, provides information regarding the first owner; the personalization is completed by the red and blue stripe placed on the lid of the trunk, the writing “Box N. 5” and the shipping labels. Perfectly restored.
Louis Vuitton trunks, iconic pieces of furniture and collectibles, are still resistant and waterproof today, examples of great craftsmanship.
