Description:
Spice box, commonly called “travel pharmacy”. Divided specularly in half, the piece of furniture closes with a central lock which also blocks the two side tables which conceal the glass bottles. Inside, the space is divided into small drawers, some, only decorative, are sliding tablets containing smaller-sized bottles, which we also find placed in some drawers; one of these also contains a “Doccia” porcelain pestle and some secret compartments. Made of walnut, all the visible part is in mahogany, with handles and locks in English-style brass, as always in brass are the rings that act as grips for the drawers.

Historical Stylistic Analysis:
The apothecary cabinet described here falls within the production of travel cabinets, writing desks, letter racks, table service boxes, etc. of mainly English production. In this case the furniture is stylistically very close to these imported products, but the construction, the use of walnut inside, as well as the presence of a porcelain pestle from Doccia manufacture and the hardware that does not possess the quality typical of England refer to a Tuscan production of the early nineteenth century.
